The Changing Face of Leadership – Murali Yadama (Managing Director of MYK LATICRETE)

Leadership is a widely discussed topic, and for good reason. The more responsibility one assumes as a leader, the greater the necessity to work with integrity and compassion. People often ask me about my leadership style, and my response centers on six core values I’ve adopted, which continue to drive my work ethic today.

1. Embracing Change

Change is constant, and no single approach works indefinitely. Focus on changes that consistently yield positive results. Acknowledging the inter-dependency between change and growth enables leaders to embrace its possibilities and create sustainable solutions.

2. Role Modeling Desired Change

As a leader, you are always under scrutiny. To lead effectively, you must embody the change you wish to see. Understand that all companies serve both corporate and social purposes, and set an example that aligns with these dual responsibilities.

3. Building Accountability Within the Team

A strong team is the backbone of effective leadership. Leadership, including self-leadership, must prioritize accountability. In an interconnected world shaped by globalization and technological advances, no business operates in isolation. Leaders must ensure accountability at every level of their organization.

4. Communicating Effectively

Clear and effective communication is vital in driving change. Unambiguous messages help teams work with greater efficiency and purpose. When leaders communicate transparently, their teams observe and learn from leadership in action, fostering trust and clarity.

5. Getting Personally Involved

Leaders must be deeply involved in pursuing change and creating impact. Personal commitment and discipline to follow through on goals are crucial. This approach has helped transform a business from fewer than five employees to a robust team of over 500 exceptional individuals.

6. Setting Measurable Goals

Leaders should set strategic, measurable goals to drive expected changes. Developing and pursuing medium and long-term objectives ensures that the enterprise aligns with its broader mission and achieves meaningful results.

The Essence of Leadership

To be a noteworthy leader, focus on creating and sustaining an enterprise that delivers value to all stakeholders equitably. Leadership involves persistence, speed, team-building, and nurturing a strong organizational culture.

At the same time, cultivate friendships and embrace life fully. Remember, this isn’t a dress rehearsal—it’s happening right now.
